Title: Understanding Early Childhood Trauma: Tools for Practice
Presenter: Elesia N. Hines, Psy.D.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1) Understand trauma and the types of traumatic events.
2) Identify signs and symptoms that may indicate a child has experienced a traumatic event.
3) Understand differences between positive stress, tolerable stress, and toxic stress.
4) Consider ways to implement trauma screening in their practices.
The Indiana Osteopathic Association (IOA) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. The IOA designates this program for a maximum of 1.00 AOA Category 2-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.
It is the policy of the IOA that any physician dissatisfied with the CME program will be issued a refund upon request, and no CME credits will be reported to the AOA. Complaints on Evaluation Forms also are taken into consideration when planning future CME programs and may lead to changes in the format or content.

Dr. Hines is a clinical psychologist at the Riley Child Development Center in Indianapolis (Indiana’s LEND program) and is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Hines provides consultation and treatment services for children presenting with anxiety, trauma, and behavior problems. She also provides psychological evaluations for children with suspected neurodevelopmental disabilities and developmental delays. Dr. Hines supervises practicum students and postdoctoral fellows, provides reflective consultation to community providers, and regularly presents trainings throughout the state on early childhood trauma, infant mental health, and autism spectrum disorder.
