Lina Palera – Ancient Modes On A Lyre (9 Lessons)
Have you always wanted your lyre playing to sound more… ancient? Or maybe just to study the ancient Greek modes and discover the music of Classical Greece? In this lesson, you are going to learn all the seven ancient modes (Dorios, Phrygios, Mixolydios etc.), how to combine them with different rhythms, and also you will learn how to play nine ancient-inspired melodies!
This course is for intermediate lyre players and for lyres of any type with at least 7 strings.* It is highly recommended to first complete the beginner courses 101, 102 and 103 available also by LyreAcademy.
At the end of the course you will know how to…
- Tune in all the ancient modes: Dorios, Ypodorios, Phrygios, Ypophrygios, Lydios, Ypolydios, and Mixolydios.
- Play the seven ancient modes on the lyre
- Find the notes of the ancient modes starting from another note-pitch than the natural mode.
- Play the 5/4 rhythm.
- Play the 9/8 rhythm.
- Play nine melodies covering all the Ancient Greek modes!

The course can be done by students with
a lyre or a kithara with 7 or more strings. Simple and step-by-step videos are available to prepare your lyre for the courses (including tuning).
Lesson 1: Introduction to Ancient Modes
You will learn what are the seven ancient Greek modes, and which notes do we use for each one? You will also get into the basic theory of the ancient Greek modes and their notes in the music stave. Finally, you are going to exercise your harmonics playing!
Lesson 2: Play two melodies in “A Ypodorios” and “B Mixolydios” mode
In this lesson we will apply our newly-acquired knowledge by playing two different melodies for two ancient Greek modes: “A Ypodorios” and “B Mixolydios”.
Lesson 3: Learn how to play in “G Dorios” mode
Let’s get familiar with the sound of “G Dorios” mode. You will learn how to tune the instrument in order to play in this mode, and you will also practice your lyre playing. The challenge of the lesson is to write your own music piece in “G Dorios” mode!
Lesson 4: Learn how to play in “G Ypolydios” mode
In thic loccon we will ovnlore “C Vnolydine” mode hy learning how to tune our instrument and how to play a given melody!
Lesson 5: Learn how to play in “G Ypodorios” mode
We are going to learn “G Ypodorios” mode, how to tune our lyre, and how to play a melody specifically written for this mode.
Lesson 6 : Learn how to play in “G Mixolidios” mode
In this lesson, we will explore “G Mixolydios” mode by learning how to tune our instrument and how to play a given melody!
Laceon 7. Loarn how to plaur in “C. Unanhruaine” modo
In this easy (for our instrument) mode we have the challenge to compose our own melody. We will also learn to play a given melody specifically written for this mode.
Lesson 8: Learn how to play in “G Lydios” mode
Change just one note and our lyre is ready for “G Lydios” mode! We are going to practice by learning how to play a given melody.
Lesson 9: Learn how to play in “G Phrygios” mode
For our final lesson, the challenge is to find the notes of the “G Phrygios” mode on your own! If you came so far in this course, then you surely know the way to do it. At the end, we will learn to play another melody specifically written for “G Phrygios”.
