Adding the left hand to your lyre playing makes a world of difference! It’s time for you to learn how to play with both hands, how to play arpeggios, learn some basic harmonics, along with adding to your repertoire three great songs: the ancient surviving melody “Oktasimon”, the melody “O Pastor” by the famous Portuguese band Madredeus and the well-known tv series theme song “Who pays the Ferryman”. This course is for beginners, and it is highly recommend to complete first the course Lyre 101: Down to the Basics, available also by LyreAcademy. This course is for lyres of any type with at least 7 strings.*

The course can be done by students with
a lyre or a kithara with 7 or more strings. Simple and step-by-step videos are available to prepare your lyre for the courses (including tuning).
Lesson 1: Introducing the left hand to your lyre playing

Lesson 2: Getting comfortable with two-hands playing
It’s time to start using more fingers with both hands, while keeping a stable takes, so let’s practice together with some exercises.
Lesson 3: Learn how to play an ancient melody
One of the original ancient melodies surviving until today, in 6/8 rhythm, is what you will be taught in this lesson, in a step-by-step learning process. Plus: Tablature/sheet music of an ancient Greek song.
Lesson 4: Learn how to play using arpeggios
In this lesson, you will experience a very pleasant way of learning arpeggios on a lyre. We will practice on this playing technique and understand its use on a lyre exercise.
Lesson 5: Learn how to play “Who pays the Ferryman”
Let’s combine all our newly acquired knowledge and lyre playing skills, by learning how to play a well-known theme song of a famous 1977 BBC tv series (by the Greek composer Yiannis Markopoulos).
Lesson 6 Harmonics on a lyre
Your first rendez-vous with harmonics, an advanced playing technique. Have you ever thought that 7 strings are too few? It’s time to double our notes and “unlock” our lyre’s potentials!
Lesson 7 : Learn how to play “Happy birthday”
It’s time to practice for your first live performance for your loved ones! You will learn how to play the well-known melody “Happy birthday” using your both hands, and introducing one (but very important) harmonic note!
Lesson 8 : Learn how to play “O Pastor”
We have all the needed skills now to learn how to play the famous song “O Pastor” by the Portuguese band Madredeus. Harmony and rhythm is what we are going to focus on, in order to give “voice” to our lyre!
