Module 1: Train Your Diaphragm for Optimal Breathing to Enhance Self-Awareness (July 10)
From an early age, every stress, threat, or worry we experience changes how we breathe. Then we quickly adapt to that dysfunctional breathing pattern. In time, our rib cages literally become cages, more shallow and narrow.
By the age of 5½, most children have learned to suck in their tummies. This can be due to stress, trauma, difficulty making friends, worry, peer pressure, testing at school, or just feeling they don’t fit in.
The Buddha belly of their toddlerhood is replaced by a flat-bellied fight-or-flight breathing pattern that puts them on guard, ready for the next “bear” to chase them up a tree.
You’ll test and record your health and breathing status, measuring whether you’re a shallow breather or a narrow breather, and discovering how long you can comfortably hold your breath. Note your resting breath rate and basic physical and mental health status. (In the final week of the course, you’ll re-access your breathing and health metrics to document your success.)
Once you determine your breathing style, Dr. John will teach you specific breathing techniques to address the weak links in your breathing and diaphragmatic function. Considering that 91% of athletes do not have a correctly functioning diaphragm, this initial training is a critical first step for all of us.
In this session, you’ll:
- Be introduced to Vedic Breathing as medicine
- Learn how to access your breathing and health status
- Experience Flossing the Diaphragm breathing training
- Use your breath and senses to enhance self awareness with Pratyahara
- Explore the subtle science of nostril dominance and how to coordinate your breath with action
- Discover the power of the exhale and the subtle science of slow, deep, and long breathing
- Begin your Daily Breath Self-Awareness Training — while in bed each morning and evening, practice breathing exercises to build upon each week
Module 2: Navigate Life’s Storms and Reduce Stress, Anxiety & Depression Using Optimal Breathing Patterns (July 17)
Learn how worry, anxiety, and the declining ability to handle stress are caused by dysfunctional breathing. One study showed that 75% of people who breathe inefficiently experience anxiety and panic disorders.
Anxiety is a nervous system on overdrive. It forces us to worry about future events and stress about past events. When you have anxiety, your cells respond to life as an emergency — increasing your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and numerous degenerative health concerns.
The Vedic science designed to turn off the anxiety alarms is called Dhanur Veda — the science of a warrior’s ability to stay calm in the heat of battle. These breathing techniques are well studied and documented.
They change the body’s biochemistry to support joy, happiness, and composure, even while under stress. You’ll relearn how to lengthen, deepen, widen, and slow your breath, and breathe like a baby or a dolphin, literally breathing away your anxiety and depression.
This ancient wisdom and these modern science-based tools will train you to expand your inner calm. Much like a hurricane, the bigger the eye of the storm, the more powerful the winds — and the more productive you can be.
Inside of all of us is a state of inner calm and joy and nothing has the power to take that away from you. The good news is that breathing gives you access to it.
Discover if you are an overbreather and learn breathing techniques to balance the ratios of oxygen and carbon dioxide in both your blood and your body.
In this session, you’ll:
- Discover the dangers of overbreathing and learn how to breathe like a baby, triggering a parasympathetic and vagal response with each breath
- Discern how to improve your CO2 tolerance — the chemistry of calm — with breath lengthening training
- Experience emotional freedom breathing techniques that boost nitric oxide by 15x while expanding joy
- Learn how to Breathe Away the Butterflies with a simple on-demand technique you can do anywhere
- Take action from your breath using Dhanur Veda (The Veda of the Bow) Training
- Gain an understanding of tissue hypoxia and how it opens the door for mutagenic stem cells, DNA damage, degeneration, stress, cognitive dysfunction, and mood imbalances
Module 3: Take Your Breathing Practice Off the Mat & Into Your Daily Life to Stay in “The Zone” (July 24)
It’s one thing to breathe properly during yoga or a structured breathing session, but the key is to take your new breathing practice off the mat and into your daily life.
The first step is to use movement, like a walk, hike, jog, or bike ride, as a model for maintaining an optimal breathing pattern while under physical stress. Studies show that moderate exercise just three times a week for 45 minutes can double the length of your telomeres.
Telomeres are the protective caps on your DNA. Nobel Prize science discovered that the more stressed you are, the shorter the telomeres become. Shorter telomeres lead to a shorter health span and life span.
Proper breathing during exercise can increase performance while dramatically lowering degenerative stress, wear, and tear.
Studies detailed in Dr. John’s book, Body, Mind and Sport, show that nasal breathing led to major changes in brain waves — turning them from stressed beta brain waves into meditative alpha waves during vigorous exercise.
If your nervous system can stay calm during exercise, imagine handling everyday mental and emotional stress in the same way — functioning from a calm center and staying away from destructive forces in your life.
Learn how to put the skills of Dhanur Veda, or effortless action, into practice and replicate “The Zone” or “runner’s high” in every workout — where the hard becomes easy, and yes, even blissful.
By taking the work out of the workout, you’ll remove the wear, tear, and injury linked to many exercise programs. The exercises you’ll learn in this module can be done while walking, hiking, and even during yoga.
In this session, you’ll:
- Learn nose-breathing skills to replicate “The Zone” or effortless exercise
- Explore the science of Dhanur Veda, the veda of effortless action, and use it to remain calm under stress
- Learn yoga and nose-breathing techniques for before and after each workout
- Experience a walking and breathing exercise to create better oxygen and breathing efficiency
- Learn a post-exercise breathing meditation
Module 4: Breathe Pain Away With Pranayama (July 31)
The American Lung Association says that at about age 35, normal lung function begins to decline. The lungs and rib cage work like a balloon, always trying to exhale or squeeze the air out.
Without breathing exercises to strengthen the diaphragm and create a flexible rib cage, breathing will become shallow, rigid, and tight, sending a fight-or-flight emergency message into your cells 26,000 times a day.
This breathing pattern affects all systems of the body and most directly alters your movement, posture, and biomechanical function.
For pain-free longevity, health, and happiness, learn how to voluntarily control the “involuntary” autonomic nervous system with pranayama techniques — proven to harmonize the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Learn evidence-based breathing techniques to reduce the pain response. Apply the horizontal and vertical breathing techniques you learned in earlier modules to treating pain in your lower back, shoulders, and neck, and alleviate joint pain in your arms and legs.
These techniques can turn off the stress response and turn up the regenerative vagal response directed to the painful areas of your body, amplifying self-awareness and allowing your body’s healing system to create appropriate healing responses.
In this session, you’ll:
- Gain an understanding of how to harmonize the left and right hemispheres of your brain to dial down the pain response
- Coordinate breath, awareness, silence, and intention for optimal self healing
- Discover how to strengthen your pelvic diaphragm for lower back, lower extremity, and pelvic pain
- Experience breathing techniques and stretching postures for neck, shoulder, low back, pelvic, hip, and lower extremity pain
- Learn the One-Minute Meditation with self-awareness healing
Module 5: Learn Maximal Inspiratory Breathing Techniques to Heal Your Digestive System (August 7)
In Ayurveda, it’s said that 85% of all diseases stem from digestive issues, and the most common cause of poor digestion is called Udvarta, which means upward moving digestion.
Over time, emotional stress, worry, and trauma can cause breathing to become shallow, the diaphragm to become weak, and the stomach, liver, and gallbladder be pulled up against the diaphragm.
This upward-moving digestion, called gastroparesis in Western medicine, can cause constipation, loose stools, heartburn, GERD, burping, gas, bloating, food intolerances, and more. Learn maximal inspiratory breathing techniques that have been shown to reverse heartburn and indigestion.
When the stomach moves in an upward direction, it creates upward pressure on the diaphragm which affects how you breathe, digest, handle stress, sleep, and much more.
Learn breathing practices for different digestive imbalances, exercises, and yoga postures combined with breath work to strengthen, open, relax, and allow your digestion to heal and function optimally.
In this session, you’ll:
- Learn stomach-pulling techniques to release adhesions between your stomach and diaphragm
- Learn studied breathing techniques to improve blood sugar and metabolic health
- Experience self-visceral massage techniques to release abdominal stress and adhesions caused by poor breathing habits
- Discover breathing techniques that can reverse heartburn, GERD, reflux, and more
- Learn how to optimize nostril dominance and employ vertical and horizontal breathing with asana for digestion
Module 6: Breathe Through Your Nose for the Best Sleep of Your Life (August 14)
Perhaps the greatest predictor of poor sleep is how you breathe.
Ancient Asian and other cultures trained their children to sleep with their mouths closed. If they made noise during the night, the children were put on their side with a tucked chin to retrain them to breathe through their noses at night.
Learn pre-sleep meditation and breathing techniques to facilitate a quicker entry into and a longer duration of deep sleep.
Prior to bed, practice breathing techniques that boost nitric oxide, the antiviral gas produced in the paranasal sinuses that evolved to scrub the lungs from exposure to immune-compromising bacteria and viruses during the day.
Also learn more about the subtle science of nasal dominance for sleep and the best side to sleep on for enhanced brain glymphatic drainage of toxins.
In this session, you’ll:
- Train yourself to breathe through your nose while you sleep
- Perform a bedtime meditation routine for quick access to deep sleep
- Learn a wake-up meditation routine to optimize the daytime energy production needed for deep sleep
- Initiate sleep with proper nostril dominance
- Discover the best sleep direction for your type, and learn Ayurvedic techniques for the best sleep of your life
Module 7: Connect to Your Eternal Self Through Your Breath (August 21)
Take the post-course breathing assessment to document the benefits of your new breathing abilities.
Continue to combine some of the breathing practices you’ve learned with a meditation and mantra practice from the Vedic texts to facilitate self healing and distance healing.
Learn the science of your body’s ultra-weak photon emissions or biophotons released from your DNA that can carry information and intention.
Breathing expands our knowing that we are part of something greater than just ourselves. Few of us have an active relationship with Spirit and a knowledge of how inseparable we are from those around us.
With continued practice of these breathing techniques, not only will you ensure greater health and longevity, but also develop a growing realization of your eternal self — while steadily thinning the veil between the physical and spiritual, giving you a glimpse of your full and unlimited potential.
In this session, you’ll:
- Complete your self evaluation and monitor your success
- Learn self-healing breathing and mantra meditation
- Discover distance-healing breathing
- Gain an understanding of the power of slow, gentle, proper breathing
