OTA – Fight Ready
HERE’S HOW:
I’m Chris Barnard. I’m a strength and conditioning coach, the man behind the OvertimeAthletes YouTube Channel, and I have been training high level athletes for over a decade.
I have experience with athletes of all walks including: baseball players, swimmers, football players, hoopers and more.
And recently, I’ve noticed the meteoric rise of MMA’s popularity.
As a guy who knows how to make the most physically inept person become an explosive athlete, I could have success with creating POWERFUL MMA Fighters.
However, I’m not well-versed in the intricacies of the sport, and pure power isn’t EVERYTHING you need to be successful in combat sports.
I WAS STILL UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THE OLD ARCHAIC WAYS OF TRAINING FIGHTERS STILL STOOD STRONG TODAY.
They don’t
But, I had a deep desire to create something that would help both MMA athletes AND the average MMA fan get into fighting shape.
Recently, by destiny or dumb luck,
I CROSSED PATHS WITH ONE OF MMA’S BEST STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACHES…
His name is Phil Daru, and he’s coached everyone under the sun, including names like:
Tyron Woodley,
Joanna Jedrzejczyk,
King Mo Lawal,
Dustin Poirier,
And more.
In fact, he told me that, “if you’ve seen them in the cage, he’s probably trained them in some capacity.”
He’s continuously thrived in the MMA Strength and Conditioning Arena, coaching some of the best UFC fighters around; and this year, he’s up for Trainer of the Year at the World MMA awards
JOANNA JĘDRZEJCZYK
DUSTIN POIRIER
AND HE’S RECEIVED SO MUCH MEDIA THAT HE REGULARLY GETS COFFEES BOUGHT FOR HIM WHEN HE WALKS INTO STARBUCKS.
Being involved with the sport for so long (as a fighter and coach), Phil has paved a new path when it comes to training a fighter.
In fact,
He gave me a laundry list of things most Fighters do WRONG in their training
For one, Some guys in MMA don’t see the importance of strength training.
But think about this…
If two fighters are equally matched technically, the factor that will determine the winner will be their strength. There’s no question.
THERE ARE OTHER SIMPLE THINGS THAT FIGHTERS GET WRONG TOO. THINGS LIKE:
Exercise selection : (Phil likes to utilize an unusual squat variation that is more specific to fighters)
Programming : (people who follow bodybuilding training splits, or even powerlifting splits, are wasting their time)
And
The amount of cardio fighters do : (most guys are doing WAY too much cardio, and it’s hurting their performance)
THEN THERE ARE MORE COMPLEX THINGS LIKE:
How important muscle mass is when it comes to being a fighter…
If circuit training is actually good for fighters : (This is the most popular way of training for combat sports, but it’s not always the best way to do things)
And
The CORRECT ways to build all aspects of endurance : (Most people think that endurance means doing more cardio, but it’s much, much more)
But, what impressed me even more was Phil’s approach to training fighters…
3 KEYS TO BECOMING FIGHT READY
Whether you’re a fighter getting ready for camp, or an average guy wanting to train like the fighters he sees on TV, Phil’s basic philosophy when it comes to training is this: Use general physical preparedness to get better at specifics.
In other words, become an all-around better athlete to improve at the sport.
He does this in 3 ways:
1. UTILIZING A FULL BODY APPROACH
Many MMA programs that you find out there are very cookie-cutter. You can do a quick search on a forum and find people recommending bodybuilding or powerlifting splits for MMA training.
- A fight is a full body encounter. Training the body as a whole is the most specific way we can train for a fight.
- Creates more awareness of how the body moves through space resulting in more body control, balance, and stability.
- You develop better movement qualities when training the body in its entirety in an integrated way.
- You avoid muscle imbalances that occur from training a specific muscle group too much
- Developing maximal strength which will then carry over into Power AND Endurance (both qualities necessary for ELITE fighters).
2. FOCUSING ON THE CORE
To be successful as an athlete AND in a fight, you need a strong core. Most MMA fighters have a set of armor for their midsection, and it’s strong, durable, and functional.
Phil develops a rock-solid core for his fighters with the following methods:
- Anti-flexion and anti-rotation movements
- Stabilization movements
- Diaphragmatic breathing
- Bracing techniques
- And learning to seamlessly transfer power through the body
3. CREATING SOLID STRUCTURE
As stated above, a fight is a full body encounter. To be successful in that encounter, we have to develop a strong, stable base. This is where structure becomes imperative.
Many people (fighters and regular joes) are prone to muscular imbalances, aches, and pains.
Phil helps eliminate that by:
Phil and I talked for hours about the right and wrong ways to train fighters and many of our methodologies of coaching athletes lined up.
With my desire to dig deeper into the sport of MMA and Phil’s expertise in Strength and Conditioning for MMA fighters we decided that together, we could create something that would change the terrain of programs that are available to both fighters, and MMA fans.
- Managing stressors from training and life using a simple, usually underutilized, training variable that also helps ensure steady progress
- Sound programming (Full Body Training actually limits the stress you put on the body and prevents imbalances)
- Corrective exercises
- Focusing on joint centration and biomechanics (bringing balance to the body)
When you develop a solid structure and place strength, power, and endurance on top of it, you’re setting yourself up for powerful blows that result in KO after KO.
HERE’S THE POINT
Phil and I talked for hours about the right and wrong ways to train fighters and many of our methodologies of coaching athletes lined up.
With my desire to dig deeper into the sport of MMA and Phil’s expertise in Strength and Conditioning for MMA fighters we decided that together, we could create something that would change the terrain of programs that are available to both fighters, and MMA fans.
So…
We’ve Decided to Team Up
And bring you one of the most unique and effective MMA Strength and Conditioning Programs out there. Avoiding all the pitfalls of those cookie-cutter, ill-informed, programs on the market, and taking the best knowledge from both Phil and myself.
Together, we sat down and drew up an MMA Strength and Conditioning program that would be used by a UFC Fighter. Phil and I labored over each workout, getting every minute detail just right. The reps, sets, and exercises are perfectly suited to work towards the physical focus of each phase.
This program is going to change the perspective of MMA Strength and Conditioning forever…
